There is no doubt about it, 2012 is going to be an incredible year for budding fashionistas, and with January right around the corner the time has come to discuss trends. So let’s get started!
1.) Belts. Gone are the days when a belt was simply a necessary item meant to keep your britches from falling down. Runways for 2012 spring shows were stock full of belts as statement pieces and focal points, so by all means, consider styling your outfit around your belt this year. Think detailed, patterned and eye-catching.

2.) Sunglasses. Sunglasses were a huge hit in 2011, and with so much research emphasizing the importance of sun safety we’re happy to see this trend isn’t slowing down. For 2012 though, think retro and colorful, with bold colors and thick frames. Instead of hiding behind your sunglasses, show them off!

3.) Expressive Jewelry. For years jewelry has revolved around simply wearing what “looks good,” but the idea seems to be going in an entirely different direction in 2012. The market for personalized jewelry has been exploding as of late, and there’s good reason; jewelry is being used to express your personality more than just your fashion sense.

So what would you say with your jewelry? Are you quirky, fun, elegant or shy? Show it!
4.) Hats. While they’ve always been around, hats are coming into their own in a very big way. It’s not surprising that 2012 may be the year for adding some charming headgear to your wardrobe, considering that the royal wedding seems to have had a role in jump-starting the trend. From cute bucket hats to fedoras to sweater beanies to sunhats, the runways are full of them and it doesn’t stop there; patterns and bright colors are going to be more apparent than ever. So when you wake up with a bad hair day don’t fret, just reach for your favorite topper and you’re ready to head out the door!

5.) Confidence. This, folks, is the year to shine. The best accessory, hands down, is an air of self-confidence. Whatever you choose to wear, whether it’s a funky pair of tights, a sophisticated string of pearls or an electric pink pair of high heels, own it. Throughout the years, nothing has ever been more fashionable than a woman who looks good and knows it.

What are you planning on wearing in 2012?

One of the biggest trends in fashion right now, by far, is vintage. However, it can be tough to pull off without looking like you One of the secrets to mix in vintage with modern pieces.
For example, this Pearl Flower Necklace (only $15.00!)

or this Antique Victorian Cameo Ring (only $4.95!) would be fantastic with a sleek, chic, black sheath dress.

How do you mix vintage with modern?

‘Tis the season, no? Now’s the time when work parties, dinner parties and every other kind of holiday-themed party goes into overdrive. Personally, I’ve already attended two of them, I have three more to attend before Christmas gets here, and like every other woman out there I’d prefer not to wear the same thing twice.
Having said that though, there are a few ways to make sure your party style keeps you from fading into the background.
1.) Don’t feel obligated to follow a theme. Just because you’re going to a Christmas party doesn’t mean you have to wear something in the red or green color family. Go for something bold that shows your own style preference. Have a fabulous dress in a stunning shade of pink? Wear it!

2.) Step up the accessories. Holiday parties are the perfect excuse to wear that brilliant necklace you absolutely love but always think is too over-the-top. Have a spectacular hair clip you wore to a friend’s wedding last year or a favorite sequined jacket you don’t wear enough? Bring it out to play! As long as you don’t go all out in every department (glitzy dress, jewelry, shoes, handbag, etc) you’ll be good to go.

3.) Find some inspiration. No reason to be wandering around in the dark; if you’re unsure of an outfit idea, do some research! Choose a celebrity with a similar style to your own and try to mirror their look.
4.) Don’t be afraid to reinvent a look. Going out and buying something in the latest trend could turn out to backfire, in that you’ll never end up wearing it again. Wearing a turtleneck under a belted sheath dress can make it updated, stylish, and appropriate for the occasion.
5.) Consider the sexiness factor. No matter how beautiful you are, falling out of your top or constantly tugging at your skirt is never attractive. Instead of showing skin show your shape, with a long sleeve curve-hugging mini and black tights. Even a knee length skirt and flowy top belted at the waist will do the trick. A personal trick of my own is to wear fishnet stocking under a demure dress. The contrast keeps it from looking predictable and expected.

6.) Don’t forget the undergarments! Another way to feel sexy and confident without showing skin? Wear the right undergarments. There are now countless options for shapewear, bras and panties without having to feel uncomfortable. In fact, knowing you are wearing a gorgeous leopard print bra and panty set under your holiday dress might just give you the extra confidence you need!
7.) Balance your look. It can be easy to go overboard, but it’s important to give people a chance to appreciate your outfit, not be overwhelmed by it. A statement dress is best paired with a simple handbag, whereas a minimal dress can handle a brightly embellished pair of shoes.

8.) Be comfortable. Regardless of how fantastic your outfit may be, if you’re uncomfortable all night you’re not going to be able to enjoy yourself. Wear shoes that you will be able to stand in for a decent amount of time, and wear a dress you’ll be able sit and eat in without feeling self conscious.
9.) Have a sense of humor. Yes, there is also a probably chance that you will be invited to an “ugly sweater” party, and instead of dreading dressing yourself down to look as fashion-challenged as possible, embrace it! The more you go for it the more fun it is, so hit up Goodwill or your Grandmother’s closet, find the worst sweater you can, and enjoy yourself!

10.) Own it! During my college years I worked night shifts at a hospital to pay tuition, which meant I would often go weeks wearing nothing but scrubs or pajamas. Therefore, when the time came to go out, you can bet I dressed the heck up, regardless of whether or not the people I would be with were dressing up. I vividly remember going to see a movie and wearing an adorable polka-dot dress (that I still love!) and 5” red stiletto heels. Nevermind the fact that I was getting dressed up to sit in the dark for two hours, I wanted to so I did. And I had a fantastic time! The lesson? Wear what you want and don’t apologize for it!
